Welcome
to the Pomeranian Club of Canada Puppy Puppy Stuff page.
My name is Christine Surtees, and you may be wondering why I
decided to work on this area of the PCOC web site given all the
other areas there were to chose from. Well that’s easy! I’m
just plain crazy about Pomeranian puppies so I figured anything
that had to do with puppies would have to be lots of fun.
Let
me tell you a bit about myself first and how I got into Poms,
then I’ll tell you what you can expect to find on this page.
Whether you are into show Poms or pet Poms, I know you will
enjoy this page once its finished -
which may take a while, incidentally, since I’m depending on
other PCOC members to help me with material, etc.
First,
a Bit About Me . . .
My
first Pomeranian was an impulse-buy from a pet store. I know,
exactly the wrong place to buy a puppy, and I’d never do that
now . . . but this little guy was destined to be mine.
It was Mother’s Day 1990 and my husband wanted to go to a
local pet store to buy some replacement perches for our small,
destructive parrot. While he was absorbed in the task of picking
exactly the right perch, I wandered to the back of the store
where they had glass cages of kittens, puppies and birds.
Sitting all alone in a cage was a little orange dog with a black
face. Something prompted me to ask
the sales person standing nearby if I could see the dog and she
fetched him from the cage and put him into my arms. He buried
his head into my neck. “What
took you so long, I thought you would never come.” My
husband, Larry, with perch in hand, found us still together in
deep communication. “Have
we purchased a dog?” he asked. My only response was “His name is Mishka”.
Now we had discussed that sometime in the unforeseeable
future we would like a dog to add to the cats and bird but had a
BIG dog in mind. An
Afghan or Irish Wolfhound.
We knew nothing about Pomeranians. We learned more than
we could have ever thought possible from this little puppy; he
literally changed our lives.

Both
Mishka and Lady have gone ahead to wait for us at the Rainbow
Bridge taking a piece of our hearts with them.
However, these two American puppy mill dogs, purchased
from pet stores taught us a whole lot of do’s and don’ts and
sparked an undying love and concern for this breed.
We
moved to Ottawa in the summer of 1991 and started going to see
the Pomeranians at local dog shows. We belong to The Canadian
Kennel Club, Pomeranian Club of Ontario, Pomeranian Club of
Canada and the Ottawa Kennel Club. We have met lots of dog-crazy
people, made new friends and eventually started showing, then
breeding in a small way.
We now have a very small hobby kennel (POMKEES, that name
is another story) and I indulge my love for puppies by whelping
and raising the puppies for my friend Marie of Flashingstar
Kennels as well as a litter of my own. We keep the pups until
they are 6 months old before we let them go to new homes so I
usually have at least two pups under 6 months of age playing
havoc with the rest of our crew of Pomeranians, 5 cats, a
Keeshond and a budgie.
